Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that can correct misalignments in your smile without using any metal. These invisible braces are clear, making them much less noticeable than braces you might remember from your teenage years.

These custom-made aligners cover your teeth fully and, over time, gently pull them into the proper positions. Invisalign is a discreet tool that can get you the perfect smile you’ve been seeking, but it’s important to fully understand Invisalign before making the leap. Brace yourself: here are four things to know before getting Invisalign!

#1 How is Invisalign made?

Invisalign is made of BPA-free plastic – there are no metal brackets, no wires, and no need for rubber bands or wax. As a result, these invisible braces are much more comfortable than traditional braces.

The process of making your aligners begins when we guide you through an examination, a round of x-rays, and a three-dimensional model of your teeth. You can complete each of these steps from the comfort of the Rhoades Family Dentistry office! After gathering this information, we’ll send it to an Invisalign laboratory, where they will use every piece of data to make you an aligner that fits your smile perfectly. After your Invisalign arrives, we’ll confirm that it fits well and give you more detailed instructions for the next steps of your treatment plan.

#2 How long do I need to have Invisalign?

On average, it takes a person one year to achieve their goal smile with the help of Invisalign. This is only half the time traditional metal braces take to transform your smile!

Of course, every case is unique to your needs, so the exact timeline can vary. After you’ve completed your exam and 3D model of your teeth, the RFD team will be able to give you a more specific treatment timeline.

Whether you’re an adult who is finally ready to feel confident with your smile, or a caregiver looking to help your teenager, Invisalign can be an effective and efficient opportunity for you to straighten your teeth.

#3 How do I use Invisalign?

When you pick up your aligner from our office, we’ll check for a proper fit, and make any necessary adjustments to ensure you’re comfortable. After that, it’s your job to wear them all day, every day. You’ll take them out only when eating, flossing, or brushing your teeth! And that presents another key advantage. Unlike metal braces, which can never be removed, Invisalign can be removed anytime – making eating and caring for your teeth much easier. But be sure to put your Invisalign back in after meals and brushing, because invisible braces can only work when they’re in place.

Every two weeks, you’ll change to the next set of aligners. In the first few days with a new aligner, they may feel tight or give you a little bit of discomfort. This is completely normal: Your teeth are gradually moving to new positions, so the invisible braces should get more comfortable over time. It’s important to maintain this two-week schedule so your teeth and gums have the time to adjust to these changes.

#4 What are the differences between braces and Invisalign?

Just like braces, Invisalign is used to close gaps between your teeth, treat any overbite or underbite, and correct overcrowded teeth, among other changes. However, Invisalign makes these changes without other people noticing: since these aligners are clear and removable, it’s far less likely that anyone will know you’re wearing them.

Additionally, it’s much easier to maintain good oral health when using Invisalign because you can remove the aligners to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. The BPA-free plastic is also less likely to irritate your teeth or gums, and the movement of your teeth can be more precisely controlled with Invisalign than with traditional braces!
