Daddies Have Teeth, Too!!
June 15 is Father’s Day!
Happy Father’s Day to all of you fathers out there! Rhoades Family Dentistry thought it would be a great time to talk about Men’s Oral Health! Boys, dudes, guys, dads, fathers, papas, grandpas, bros, brothers, chicos – time to listen! According to studies and surveys from the American Dental Association, men are less likely to partake in preventative dental care than women. They also say men may have more neglected oral health, and for many years. Ok guys, time to make some changes! The studies also show men are less likely to brush more than ONE time a day…EW! Brushing after each meal is very unlikely for most men. Just a heads up, by brushing after you eat and before bed- you are killing the bacteria that love to attack your tooth enamel. If the bacteria attacks the tooth enamel, say hello to Mr. Cavity!
Studies indicate that peridontal (gum) disease is more likely in men than women. Not sure if you have heard, but Gum Disease has been linked to cardiovascular disease (which puts you at a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes). You need to look for signs of Gum Disease like red, swollen, bleeding gums, bad breath and loose teeth. Dr. Hahn will check to see if she notices any signs of periodontal disease at your next visit.
Guys, if you take medicine for allergies, blood pressure, heart conditions, anxiety, or depression they could be causing Dry Mouth. If you have noticed a dryer mouth, increase your intake of water and give Rhoades Family Dentistry in Olathe a call. It is important to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hahn so she can give you a treatment plan to help your dry mouth. Chewing sugarless gum and avoiding smoking, alcohol, salty foods, high sugar intake, and carbonated drinks will also help.
Mouth guards! These are NOT just for contact sports. These bad boys can really help a man. If you play sports, have stress, grind your teeth, are anxious and/or snore at night – mouth guards can really help you out! You will be so surprised at how great you feel after improving your quality of sleep with a nightguard.
Men who smoke or chew tobacco, have a greater risk for gum disease AND cancer. Even men who DO NOT smoke or chew have a higher risk than women to get gum disease AND cancer – so using tobacco only increases your risk. If oral cancer goes unnoticed and untreated it can spread, causing pain, numbness, loss of function and death. Dr. Hahn offers Oral Cancer Screenings here at Rhoades Family Dentistry and recommends everyone over the age of 18 be screened once a year.
